RSE
At The Secret Garden, we are committed to delivering high-quality Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) that is inclusive, age-appropriate, and sensitive to the needs of all pupils. Our policy is guided by statutory requirements, safeguarding duties, and best practice to ensure pupils develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives.
RSE at our school promotes respect, equality, and understanding, helping children and young people to build strong and positive relationships. It supports their personal development by addressing emotional wellbeing, resilience, consent, diversity, and the challenges of growing up in a modern world, both online and offline. Lessons are taught within a safe and supportive environment, where pupils are encouraged to reflect, ask questions, and engage in discussions with respect and sensitivity.
In primary years, the curriculum focuses on the foundations of positive friendships, family life, kindness, respect, and understanding changes such as puberty. At secondary level, this is built upon with further learning about healthy relationships, consent, sexual health, managing peer pressure, online safety, and awareness of gender identity and diversity. Across all stages, pupils are supported to make informed decisions and to understand personal boundaries and the importance of consent.
Our teaching is inclusive and accessible to every pupil, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Lessons are adapted to individual needs, with careful consideration given to pupils’ maturity, backgrounds, and personal circumstances. We are committed to respecting different cultural and religious perspectives while ensuring that all pupils receive their entitlement to statutory education.
The policy and curriculum are reviewed annually to ensure they remain effective, inclusive, and in line with statutory guidance. Monitoring includes pupil feedback, parental consultation, and regular assessment of teaching practices.
Through our RSE programme, The Secret Garden aims to equip every pupil with the knowledge, understanding, and values they need to navigate relationships, health, and wellbeing with confidence and respect.
